The road is a biker’s solace but could also be his worst nightmare. Accident, by definition, is “an unfortunate event resulting especially from carelessness or ignorance,” which may include casualties. As much as they can, motorcycle drivers should try to avoid accidents by being careful, aware, and prepared.

Below is the list of some of the most common causes of motorcycle accidents.

On top of the list is overspeeding. While this is what’s needed in racing, the superfast speed could be quite difficult to control. And when mishaps happen, there could be no time to react. On average driving (meaning not racing), however, speeding is not advisable with traffic, especially with congested traffic or on dangerous road conditions.

Driving under the influence can impair one’s judgment, which can affect one’s driving.

There are a lot of things that could distract a driver—from lights to sound to gadgets. If the driver is out of sorts and cannot seem to focus, it is best not to be on the road. Not feeling well or if one is feeling faint or sick—or if one suffers from seizures—it is not advisable to drive a motorcycle.

In a desire to not be caught in a red light, some drivers would fervently twist the throttle in an attempt to beat the red light to get to the other side.

Driving without the appropriate gear is like tempting the fates, or just the weather, which can take its toll on the driver. Long drive or short, paved or rough road, helmets, jackets, pants, boots, gloves, suits, and body armor are necessary to protect a driver from the weather, the debris, and the impact should there be collision. Also, always check your motorcycles if it is up for a ride. Motorcycle defects can also contribute to a mishap in driving. Always check if the motorcycle brakes, signals, etc., are working.

Inappropriate driving manners such as overtaking on the wrong side or not driving on one’s own lane. Also, lane splitting and unsafe lane changes.

Inexperienced driver on the highway. While it is best to learn by practicing driving, the new driver should not practice on the road with traffic.

Believe it or not, opening car doors can also be a cause of accidents. Motorcycle riders should watch out for parked cars.

Keeping distance is also applicable as sudden stops can cause collisions.

The left-turning cars or any other vehicles may not see a motorcycle approaching on the left side, so it is better to watch out for these signs.

It is best to be safe on the road always—for one’s self and for the people on the road with them.
